Has BGYO Found the Keys to Their Their New Era?

So, you know those keys we’ve been seeing in BGYO’s teasers since ‘Tumitigil Ang Mundo?’ We finally know what they were for - the door to the Aces of P-Pop’s even greater potential. These boys are taking off in a new direction - and it looks good on them. Don’t worry; we’ve got plenty to say about their latest single, so grab a drink or snack and settle in. This is ‘Magnet’ by BGYO.

It’s been a fever pitch of new music from BGYO since they first debuted in January 2021, and it seems like this quintet never takes a break. ‘Magnet’ is not only their 9th single with a music video; it’s also the lead-off track for their second album, BE:US. Now, the tea is a little thin on when this sophomore album is set to drop, but one thing we do know? BGYO looks to be continuing that fever pitch. The good news is that ‘Magnet’ is doing several big things absolutely right.

Embracing a New Side?

[Mikki] is stealing the scene in ‘Magnet’ and distinguishing himself as an all-around performer who could easily be mistaken for the main dancer or visual with his electric and sensual individual sequences

For us, ‘Magnet’ is BGYO’s best song since their debut single, ‘The Light.’ It’s a bold statement with 7 music videos in between, but we’re partial to the boys when they embrace a darker aesthetic. It’s right in line with the work of P-pop groups in 2022 - many of whom are testing the waters of their edgier and more intense sides. It’s also an angle that suits the boys well. Not only do they seem more comfortable, but the choreography and acting feel natural. It makes sense, too - ‘The Light’ had a much more edgy appeal as well, and they were contributing writers on that single.

A surprising standout in the music video for us was main rapper Mikki. He’s stealing the scene in ‘Magnet’ and distinguishing himself as an all-around performer who could easily be mistaken for the main dancer or visual with his electric and sensual individual sequences. He’s earning a bit more time in the front of group shots and choreography, and it’s definitely well-deserved.

Continuing Their Momentum

The potential of BGYO is obvious with this lead single, and it’s legit. Their vocals are reaching new heights; the acting is on point, and they’re making huge strides as dancers.

There is one thing we really crave with ‘Magnet,’ though, and it’s a big one. One of the reasons’ The Light’ remains our favorite track is that the members of BGYO contributed to its creation. It’s no secret that we are big fans of self-creation when it comes to music. We’re starting to see it dominantly in P-Pop, from the supergroups to the rookies. It’s also something we know BGYO is capable of, and we’d love to see them given more control over their own work. Why are we so passionate about artists having a hand in creating their own music? Passion follows creation. When an artist is passionate, they give it their all. Plus, it allows them the freedom of longevity and the ability to morph, despite perceived threats of age or future trends. Is it the missing piece in a different direction that could propel them to new heights? We think so.

Unfortunately, we wanted more of that choreo in this video, which is disappointing, especially when what we see is so intriguing.

It boggles the mind to imagine what they will grow into.

We know they’ve got their ACEs in their corner, and with nurturing? It boggles the mind to imagine what they will grow into. With their sophomore album in the wings and an upcoming international performance with ASAP Natin ‘To Live in Las Vegas? All eyes are on BGYO as they enter the world stage.
