P-Pop is Ready to Rise in the Western World

For too long, P-Pop has not-so-quietly risen up in the Philippine music scene. It distinguished itself as a subgenre of OPM and created a unique sound from the Pop genres of the world. Now, with one big push, P-Pop is proving it knows how to strike when the iron is hot. Three giants of P-Pop are in the United States and ready to represent their homeland.

The Siblings Strike Out Together

It turns out that two of the giants of P-Pop are traveling together to Las Vegas, NV, for their first performance in the United States. BINI and BGYO are joining the ASAP Natin ‘To tour stop in Sin City at the Orleans Hotel and Casino. Though the performance is part of the touring company, the Orleans is a big venue, and the sibling groups will perform in front of several thousand ASAP Natin ‘To fans and Las Vegas tourists.

Kings, Ambassadors & Artists

SB19 at the Philippine Consulate in New York City

The third P-Pop giant docking in American media is none other than the P-Pop kings, SB19. They’ve been going hard since the release of their comeback single, ‘WYAT,’ and their first world tour. In addition to four WYAT tour stops in the Philippines, they’ve tacked on a music festival performance, endless promotional materials and guestings, and a slew of tv performances in the last two months. Now, they’ve successfully launched the international leg of their tour with a stop in Dubai before landing in New York City for the next show. They quickly made a splash by fulfilling their duties as NCCA and Sentro Rizal Youth Ambassadors at the Philippine Consulate in New York City just in time for the Filipino-American Month celebrations.

SB19 at Good Day New York with Rosanne Scotto

Their biggest accomplishment in the first 24 hours of their stay was likely their first US television guesting on Good Day New York. During the entertainment section, they proudly performed ‘WYAT’ live for Ms. Rosanne Scotto as part of her morning show. In the quick post-performance interview, Ms. Scotto praised their songwriting and choreography skills, and the boys took the brief opportunity to highlight their culture.

P-Pop Rises in the West

With SB19, BINI, and BGYO taking such prominent stages and actively promoting their genre, this is likely the first time many Americans will be hearing the words P-Pop and Pinoy Pop on mainstream media.

All three groups still have work to do in the US before they head home as well. SB19 has another 3 tour stops in the United States, starting with New York City and then moving westward to Los Angeles and San Francisco. BINI and BGYO will also join SB19 on WishBus USA where they will bring P-Pop to the streets of Los Angeles.

With SB19, BINI, and BGYO taking such prominent stages and actively promoting their genre, this is likely the first time many Americans will be hearing the words P-Pop and Pinoy Pop on mainstream media. These groups are now finding distinction among pop fans in the Western world in addition to the recognition they fought long and hard to find in their homeland. As SB19 expressed many times, the ultimate dream is not about their personal success but rather about what they can do for their country and their people. We can only hope that as the giants of P-Pop continue to take strides forward, they can pull the Western world and the Philippines closer together - strengthening cultural ties and making the world bigger, richer, and filled with music for everybody.
